How excited was I to see this smiling face last night?
Donnie is one of my *favorite* soul singers. Seeing him sing “You’ve Got a Friend” and “Cloud Nine” live at MJQ is one of my strongest musical Atlanta memories.
Well, last night he joined a panel on “The Sexual Politics of Black Sacred Music” at First Corinthians Baptist Church. His presence and his words testified to the pain our churches have caused our LGBTQ brothers and sisters.
His opening comments are something that I’ll always remember, “This [being on a sexuality panel in a church] is a monumental moment for me. I’m about to be forty and I just started loving myself because people told me God didn’t like me.”
We, at Jooksi, are certainly grateful that he’s finally on his love journey. And we thank him for not only sharing his gift, but sharing his truth.
Shine on radiant child, shine on!
